What Do You Want to Be?

Right now, #Everybodywantstobe is trending on Twitter.  What are the scriptural ramifications of this statement?  The Bible teaches us that what we want to be and what we need to be are not always the same thing.  For instance, in Romans 1 Paul basically asserts that we want to be our own boss…our own god, and as a result we have tried to make up our own set of rules for how we live. Paul goes on to show that God actually allows us to be what we want to be.  If we want to be our own god, then God will eventually just allow us to become exactly what we want to be, but the results of our desires are less than stellar.

The great problem here is that we are not the boss and there is one Supreme God whose laws govern the universe. If we choose to follow our own sinful desires rather than the good and perfect plan of God, then we separate ourselves from the God of the universe and condemn ourselves to eternity separated from God.  God loves us enough to give us a way out of our sin and into his family.  Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and Romans 6:23 says we actually deserve death because of our sins.  God, however, being rich in mercy came to earth in the person of Christ and died for us even when we were his enemies.

Romans 10 says,

[9] because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. [11] For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” [12] For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. [13] For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
(Romans 10:9-13 ESV)

So what?  Who do you want to be?  Do you want to be?  A child of wrath or a child of the king.  You can follow your own path, but in the end it leads to destruction, but the path of God leads to eternal life.  Will you follow him today?  For more on what it means to become a Christian, check this out.
