I’ve long been an advocate for emphasizing masculinity within the church and all of Christianity. If we are not careful, we can feminize the church to such a degree that men feel very alienated. I wrote last year about the need to reach men from the pulpit and I continue to believe that it is very necessary within the local church.
Today a friend (actually a former student from my student ministry) sent me a link a podcast from the Art of Manliness that examines Christianity, Masculinity, and Some Manly Maxims of Stephen Mansfield. Mansfield has written a book that I will soon acquire titled Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men.

- Manly men do manly things.
- Manly men tend their field.
- Manly men build manly men.
- Manly men live for the glory of God.
As a church we need to acknowledge the difference between men and women and make sure that our ministries cater to both. We must focus on the doing aspects of men as we consider how it is that we can reach men. Manly men have no desire to sit around pouring out their emotions, but they are excited to “do” things together and to grow in relationship and experience discipleship through the doing of things.
