Church Growth

Ed Stetzer & Comeback Churches

Last year, Ed Stetzer was interviewed about some of the research from his book Comeback Churches, which we reviewed last year. You can read that review here. Below, is a video concerning the Role of Leaders/Teamwork. Good stuff here. Also, see the rest of the interview over at Ed Stetzer’s blog.

What Makes Church Growth Easy

I found this from J.D. Greear this morning and thought it was very good. Hopefully you can benefit from his insights.  Greear writes: “In Joshua 2:8-11, ex-prostitute Rahab explains that a “fear of God” had come upon all the inhabitants of Canaan. This fact made Israel’s military exploits much easier. For the most part, military …

Book Review: Staff Your Church For Growth

I was excited to read this book as a pastor because I always want to know what I can do to help our church to move forward and staffing is always a difficult issue to deal with.  Staff Your Church For Growth is a book that pastors should read early in their ministry because it …

Book Review: Effective Evangelistic Churches

Thom Rainer is a great writer and a tireless researcher.  In Effective Evangelistic Churches, he has once again proven his salt.  The downside for those of you outside of the Southern Baptist Convention, is that this book focuses solely on the Southern Baptist Convention.  In an attempt to find a homogenous group with easily identifiable …

Obstacles to Effective Evangelism

J.D. Greear addressed five obstacles to effective evangelism at the South Carolina Baptist State Evangelism Conference yesterday.  Greear used 1 Corinthians 9:19-26 as his text and I think he did a great job.  I’ve listed his five obstacles below. 1. Being satisfied with Biblical faithfulness and not effective ministry (v. 22). 2. We don’t know …

Spurgeon on Church Growth

I heard of a report of a church, the other day, in which the minister, who was well known to have reduced his congregation to nothing somewhat cleverly wrote, “Our church is looking up.” When questioned with regard to this statement, he replied, Everybody knows that the church is on its back, and it cannot do anything else but look up.” When churches are looking up in that way, their pastors generally say that you cannot tabulate the work of the Spirit, and calculate the prosperity of a church by figures. The fact is, you can reckon very correctly if the figures are honest, and if all circumstances are taken into consideration: if there is no increase, you may calculate with considerable accuracy that there is not much being done; and if there is a cleare decrease among a growing population, you may reckon that the prayers of the people and the preaching of the minister are not of the most powerful kind.

Comeback Churches

Ed Stetzer has written a winner in Comeback Churches. Many “how to” books exist to direct pastors and churches how to grow. Stetzer has not written one of those, instead he has written a book that focuses on research of over 300 churches that were either plateaued or in decline and made a turn around. …
