As he makes his case, Bell seems to delight in being obtuse, creating caricatures of opposing views that lack logic and compassion. He paints himself as the victim of the hateful, toxic, venomous denizens of certain corners of the Internet that believe “the highest form of allegiance to their God is to attack, defame, and slander others who don’t articulate matters of faith as they do” (p. 185).

My favorite quote of the week came from Nathan Finn’s blog on some recent controversy in the SBC (good entry by Dr. Finn and worth you while, by the way).
On the other hand, I’m pretty young (can’t help it–it’s my parent’s fault) and mostly Reformed (ditto–I’m just a biblicist). That’s strike one with some folks. I’m a member of a medium-sized church of about 400 or so, which means my church isn’t small enough to be part of the pure majority. Strike two. And I work at Southeastern Seminary, which along with our sister in Louisville is apparently a demon portal through which all the dark spirits enter into our Baptist Zion. Strike three. I guess all this means I am a Presbyterian emergent charismatic hipster who is ashamed of my Southern Baptist heritage.

Just wanted to comment on your comment on Tim Challies book review of Rob Bell’s new book. The reason why the critics, I being one of them, said wait for the book to come out before you make foolish comments, John Piper, is because its not our job to cast presupposed comments about someone who is known for stirring the pot. Looking at the questions Bell asked in his promo video are not heretical at all, and must be answered by all believers if they get outside of their bubbles. If you are completely honest with yourself you know that there is a biblical answer for all of the things that Rob Bell addressed, even as I watched the video verses were brought to mind that answer the questions he presented. I just wanted to let you know its comments like Piper’s that non-believers don’t want to be a part of the church, where is the love that he and other Christians swear to live by? I agree Jesus is THE ONLY MEANS OF SALVATION, but if I allow my brother to stumble and not help him, how can I say that I follow Christ? How can I tell someone else to love and shepherd them if I right them off and do not pray for them or take them and show them the truths of God’s word? Not only is he not believing the truth but he is preaching it to the masses therefore leading many astray. I’m equally disappointed in John Piper as I am in Rob Bell, both have not displayed the love of Christ in recent weeks. I pray for Piper and for you that y’all would show God’s love and not jump to conclusions which shows non-believers an inaccurate dipiction of Christ’s love; I also pray for Rob Bell that the Lord would do a work in his heart that he would know the truth that Jesus’ sacrifice of taking on God’s wrath for sin is the only means of which man can be saved and be a part of the “few.” I ask that you would do the same. The only reason why I typed this is because I care about you and want to see the Lord continue to use you as an instrument for His kingdom until the day He returns or calls you home.
